The Crossing

The clean version: every tussock is either solid or sinking — you have to work out which.

  • Step on it for free, or throw a stone at it (−1 stone) to play it safe.
  • Step on a sinking one and you slide back to the shore.
  • Score = stones left − falls.
STAKES

Stakes on the Tussocks

Every tussock shows a number — the stake. Now it is not just about crossing, but about deciding well.

  • Step on a solid one for +the number; on a sinking one it is −half the number and back to the shore.
  • Big numbers are worth a lot, and a sink only costs you half of them.
  • Score = points earned on tussocks + stones left × 2.
Difficulty (field size, share of sinking tussocks) grows round by round as your score climbs.

How? Every tussock shows its stake (the number on it), but not whether it's solid or sinking. You either step onto a neighboring tussock — if it's solid, +the number; if it sinks, −half the number and back to the shore — or first throw a stone at it (−1 stone) to play it safe.
Big numbers are worth a lot, and a sink only costs you half of them — testing with a stone mainly saves you from falling back to the shore (there are at most four 8s in the whole bog). Round score: points earned on tussocks + every stone left × 2.
